Important things to remember for Christmas and New Year’s Eve

Christmas and New Year’s Eve are fast approaching! We have compiled a few key points to keep in mind for the upcoming holidays. Here you will find information on safety, Christmas waste recycling, and office opening hours.

Candles and fire safety

Fire safety is important every day of the year. However, during Christmas, candles may be burned more than usual, so here is a short checklist for their safe use:

  • There should be nothing flammable near candles
  • Candle holders must be non-flammable
  • The last person to leave the room must always extinguish the candles
  • Tealights and table candles can be placed approximately five centimeters apart – no closer
  • Test your smoke alarm once a month and replace the battery once a year

Fireworks and safety

Fireworks are part of many New Year’s Eve traditions – unfortunately, however, they often cause injuries, especially eye injuries. To prevent injury to yourself or others, please use fireworks with care.

  • Fireworks may be used between 6 p.m. on December 31, 2025, and 2 a.m. on January 1, 2026.
  • Persons under the age of 18 are prohibited from possessing fireworks.
  • Carefully read the instructions for use of fireworks.
  • Only set off fireworks from a stable surface that cannot be knocked over by the wind.
  • Ensure there is sufficient distance to other people, buildings, and vehicles.
  • Be aware of the effects of strong winds: increase the distance and aim carefully.
  • Remember to wear protective eyewear!
  • Read more about the safe use of fireworks on the Tukes website:How to light fireworks safely | Finnish Safety and Chemicals Agency (Tukes)
